Cusickfunkenstein.....

Ummmm.....yikes.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery?

Brit Lit:

This morning we started class with Oingo Boingo doing Weird Science to set the tone. We continued or "Frankenstein" creature debate. Being Friday, I asked you to make a a creature. You had the option to draw, or write a detailed description.
The receipt: 2 parts animal, 2 part technology, 2 part famous. I put them up in the back corner above the "Godfather."
Next, we passed around a candle and read aloud the debate between the creature and creator on making another creation. "You are my creator, but I am your master..."

Here is my Cusickfunkenstein.....

To be, socks...

In the World of Shakespeare today, we watched 10 minutes of the Gibson version of Hamlet. We discussed the different portrayal of Kline/Gibson. While Kline is crazy, Gibson has anger. Dig the alliteration there?

I gave you the below speech and your sock version of yourself and asked you to break into small groups and debate the meaning. You had two choices:
Act it out, with 3 changes of emotion.
or
Act it out as a famous celebrity. Video to follow....

To be or not to be, that is the question;
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And by opposing, end them.
To die, to sleep;
No more; and by a sleep to say we end
The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks
That flesh is heir to — 'tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wish'd.
To die, to sleep; To sleep, perchance to dream.
Ay, there's the rub,For in that sleep of death what dreams may come,
When we have shuffled off this mortal coil,
Must give us pause.
There's the respectThat makes calamity of so long life,
For who would bear the whips and scorns of time,
Th'oppressor's wrong, the proud man's contumely,
The pangs of despised love, the law's delay,
The insolence of office, and the spurns
That patient merit of th'unworthy takes,
When he himself might his quietus make
With a bare bodkin? who would fardels bear,
To grunt and sweat under a weary life,
But that the dread of something after death,
The undiscovered country from whose bourn
No traveller returns, puzzles the will,
And makes us rather bear those ills we have
Than fly to others that we know not of?
Thus conscience does make cowards of us all,
And thus the native hue of resolution
Is sicklied o'er with the pale cast of thought,
And enterprises of great pitch and moment
With this regard their currents turn awry,
And lose the name of action.

2 parts animal, 2 parts tech, 2 part person....

Soph Lit:

HW: Learn 14 lines by Puck at the end of the play.

Brit Lit:

Today in class I gave my history of horror lecture in 20 minutes. I could spend an entire class on some of that information. We looked at Dracula, the wolf man, and the original silent Phantom of the Opera. You seemed so disappointed in his horrific face. People really did run from the theatre when they first saw his face.

WOS:

Today in class you presented you sonnets. I loved them! I will post a few of them in the next few days. Great job guys!

Friday, the socks come off....

Soph Lit:

Today in class, you presented your "powerpoint poem." So good stuff indeed. I hope that the assignment allowed you to connect to the imagery in poetry. Much like music, poems can be used to compliment feeling. The next time that you are feeling blue, try reading a poem. As human beings we are deeply connected. Poetry allows us to see that we are not alone in our feelings. Emily Dickerson never imagined that her poems might help another person when she scribbled them downs in a small room, afraid of the world. Poetry is not just "school stuff"- it is a deep connection to human emotion, which we all share.

WOS:

Today in class I gave you notes on the 5 stages of grief. We began to look at Hamlet, and how he follows these stages.

We broke into groups of 3 and examined the grief process, and how Hamlet deals with his "father issues."

HW: Sonnet assignment is due Wed. I will continue to stay late to help any of you that may be "technically challenged."

Brit Lit:

Today in class we updated out "scientific discovery" journals. Please remember that you will need ten entries. Today in class we did the first 2: 1-7, and 7-23.

To set the mood, we broke into "book clubs" and read pgs 97-108 in the dark under stormy sound effects. Did it hold up to your horror expectations?

The last part of the block, we talked about the status of human cloning. What are the implications if we can duplicate life? Why do we have real life "Dr. Frankensteins' ?"
HW please read pgs 108- 120. Please work on a journal entry for these pages, as well as #3 from the reading that you did in small groups.

WOS:

Today in class we followed along with the Kline version of Hamlet. Like all Shakespeare tragedies, Hamlet uses Act 2 as the fuel to propel the action. The fuel in Hamlet is his emotion.

The second part of the block, I broke you into small groups and asked you to "translate" 5-10 lines and present the "emotion." I suggested to you as a class that power acting, is well... powerful. Anger can also be soft. Listen to Tchaikovsky: Symphonies no 4, 5, & 6. Quiet anger.

Sonnet projects due May 14th. 14 lines in a sonnet.... hmmmmmmm...

Brit Lit:

Today in class we discussed comic books, sequels, and how to write a novel at the tender age of 18. I suggested a pilgrimage th That's Entertainment in Worcester ASAP. Trust me.. it is a wicked cool place.

In class we spent the first 30 min writing a sequel to Frankenstein using the pictures presented to you. Not one of my finer assignments- To be honest, it was a dud.

For HW: Please read pgs 7-28 in Frankenstein.
Please continue working on your Scientific discovery journal. Write 5 sentences summarizing the discoveries from the reading that night. I will collect this at the end- so please keep up.

Soph Lit:

Today we finished our PowerPoint poetry. Please finish for HW if you were not able to finish this in class.

Wednesday, we will be taking notes on Shakespeare. Please make sure that you have you notebooks.

SONNET 55

Not marble, nor the gilded monuments
Of princes, shall outlive this powerful rhyme;
But you shall shine more bright in these contents
Than unswept stone besmear'd with sluttish time.
When wasteful war shall statues overturn,
And broils root out the work of masonry,
Nor Mars his sword nor war's quick fire shall burn
The living record of your memory.
'Gainst death and all-oblivious enmity
Shall you pace forth; your praise shall still find room
Even in the eyes of all posterity
That wear this world out to the ending doom.
So, till the judgment that yourself arise,
You live in this, and dwell in lover's eyes.

Soph Lit:

Today in class we went to the computer lab to work on your "PowerPoint poetry" projects. I have the lab scheduled for us Tuesday if needed.

Here again is the assignment:

Please take a poem or song lyrics that are meaningful to you. Using PowerPoint, digital images and music, create a slide show that compliments the images in the poem. DO NOT include random images of the artist if using song lyrics. The point of this assignment is to use multimedia to tell the story of the words. We will be presenting these in class on Wednesday.

I hope to post some of them here...so stay tuned....

WOS:

HW: Please continue to work on your multimedia sonnet interpretation. These are Due May 14th.

Today in class we began Hamlet. Please make sure you get the notes if you were absent.
